You Better Recognize!

Everyone wants to feel appreciated for a job well done, but employee recognition shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all solution. What works for your Millennial employees might not be as appreciated by your Boomer folks, so it’s important to figure out what resonates with all of your people.

Keep in mind that, while definitely welcome, rewards don’t always have to be monetary. Just like money can’t buy love or happiness, it also can’t buy employee loyalty and engagement. You don’t have to break the bank to improve engagement. Effective tactics can include:

  • Supplying the right tools so that employees can effectively perform their jobs
  • Giving individual attention and understanding individual needs
  • Providing training and coaching
  • Listening to employees and making them feel heard
  • Helping employees find purpose through work
  • Investing in supervisor training to help decrease turnover and increase engagement

Some team members will also be happy with a public “thanks,” in a team meeting, others might prefer a handwritten note, or a restaurant gift card.

Consider hosting Taco Tuesday or Free Bagel Friday to announce kudos for the week. Little perks like these let your employees know you care about them and value their hard work. Everyone likes to be treated to freebies, and this small gesture also encourages bonding among your employees. Even if you host a day like this just once a month, your staff will have a fun time to look forward to.

Showing appreciation doesn’t have to be complicated, but it can have a huge impact on engagement.
